Chores for Boys

Yeah...so I'm not that mom who freaks out when her children are playing with yard tools.  In fact, I will most likely be encouraging it if it gets a chore done that I didn't really feel like doing myself.*  The sunflowers are down now and the heads are being saved as special winter treats for good chickens.

*Fear not, no little boys were maimed in the completion of this chore.  Though, I suppose they could have been.  But I would have been right there watching and taking pictures when it happened.

  1. I met a mom recently who told me she doesn't allow her boys to play with sticks. They're too dangerous.

    ???

I was kind of baffled for a response.

    Such industrious boys, yours. :)

  2. Wow. Um, yeah, I don't think I'd know what to say either. She probably would have heart failure if she knew one of my boys used a STICK to make a bow and then whittled another stick into an arrow! And, yes, they are industrious...if it involves me letting them use sharp tools :)

  3. I am one of those moms who had rules about sticks -- No Running with them or Whipping Them Around withing 10 yards of a sibling -- but I give then their own scissors and let them use a sharp knife to help me chop veggies at 18 months and use of tools grows from there -- for my 4 girls as well as my 2 boys.
I only recommend really sturdy shoes -- the little hatchet is so easy to chop toes off -- ask my Chris...

    1. Oooh, I don't know if I want to hear that story!! Yeah, we have rules with the stick-playing and they're not allowed to hit each other or anything like that. I love the idea of teaching children the proper use of tools rather than just forbidding it all together. Our neighbors tried to hide their shock that I let John Paul work on his tree house with his own screwdriver and child-size saw...
